Description

The Iowa Dental Assistant Expanded Functions (EFDA) Instructor is responsible for delivering high-quality online instruction to dental assisting students seeking Expanded Functions certification in accordance with Iowa Dental Board rules. This role focuses on teaching theory, supervising clinical skill development (via approved formats), assessing student competency, and ensuring compliance with state regulations and program standards. Dental Radiology and Infection Control will be included in this job summary.

Job Duties

Key Responsibilities

Instruction & Curriculum

  • Assist in creating and deliver engaging online instruction for Iowa Expanded Functions Level I-approved coursework
  • Infection control and safety
  • Iowa Dental Practice Act and Board rules
  • Facilitate virtual demonstrations, case discussions, and skills-based learning activities
  • Align instruction with Iowa Dental Board requirements and approved curriculum standards
  • Teach expanded functions theory, including but not limited to:
    • Placement and removal of gingival retraction material
    • Taking Occlusal Registrations
    • Fabrication, temporary cementation, and removal of provisional restorations following review of fit and function.
    • Applying cavity liners and bases and desensitizing agents
    • Applying bonding systems
    • Placement, bonding, and removal of provisional orthodontic restorations
    • Taking final impressions
    • Placement of temporary restorative materials following preparation of the tooth by a dentist
    • Extraoral adjustment to acrylic dentures without making any adjustments to the prosthetic teeth.
    • Tissue conditioning
    • Placement, management, and removal of an IV infusion line for moderate sedation deep sedation, or general anesthesia
    • Monitoring nitrous oxide
    • Removal of adhesives using nonmotorized hand instrumentation

Student Assessment & Support

  • Evaluate student knowledge through exams, quizzes, and assignments
  • Assess clinical competencies using approved documentation, simulations, or in-person evaluations as required
  • Provide timely, constructive feedback and academic support
  • Monitor student progress and maintain accurate academic records

Technology & Online Learning

  • Utilize Learning Management Systems (LMS) for course delivery
  • Maintain an accessible and professional online learning environment





Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Current Iowa dental license- (Dental Hygienist) or Iowa-certified Expanded Functions Dental Assistant eligible to instruct
  • Minimum of 2â??3 years of clinical experience performing expanded functions
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Iowa Dental Board Expanded Function rules
  • Experience teaching or training adult learners, preferably in a CE setting
  • Proficiency with online instruction platforms and virtual teaching tools
